Scuba Diving Anilao

Class 1 Philippine Scuba Diving Destination

Anilao is considered to be the birthplace of scuba diving in the Philippines. Since the 1960s the adventurous from Metro Manila have traveled to Anilao / Mabini to learn to scuba dive. In those days, enthusiasts would bring portable compressors to refill their scuba tanks and camping on the beaches was the norm.

By the 1990s, Anilao was catering to the elite scuba diver as well as the scuba diver on a budget, and resort hotels of all types and budgets blossomed along the coastline. The main attraction of Anilao is access to the nearby islands & reefs that provide fascination for scuba divers of all levels of experience. The marine life here is so prolific and diverse that educational establishments from around the World come frequently to study different marine species. For example: recent assessments by U.S. based marine researchers have determined that almost two-thirds of the 900+ nudibranch species that exist on Earth can be found at dive sites around Anilao and in the nearby waters of the Verde Island Passage.

Scuba Diving Highlights In Anilao

Whatever your level of scuba diving experience, Anilao offers a wide variety of locations for diving enjoyment. Some the highlights of Anilao scuba diving are:

Sombrero Island

Sombrero Island, off the West end of Maricaban Island, about twenty minutes by boat from Anilao, offers a unique marine habitat as it sits at the division of the shallower, more sheltered waters of Balayan Bay and the deep channel and strong tidal flows of the Verde Island Passage . . . whether your interest is large or small marine life you will find it all here when diving Sombrero Island

The Twin Rocks

the Twin Rocks, off the southern tip of the Anilao / Mabini peninsular for schools of jacks and other pelagics passing through the passage between Anilao and Maricaban Island, find the Twin Rocks to the southwest of Anilao peninsular

The Cathedral

the Cathedral is a large depression in the sea floor where a cross was sunk to the seabed many decades ago and where student scuba divers are taken on certification dives, the smaller reef fish here are familiar with divers and congregate around them in expectation of frequent feeding . . . but watch out for the occasional stone fish when diving the Cathedral.

The more adventurous scuba divers will dive the reefs off the East end of Maricaban Island and around Chicken Feather and Bonito islands, where strong tidal flows make timing of dives important.

In all there are at least 22 recognized dive sites around Anilao, ranging in depths from 10 to 35 meters.
