Kiteboarding Boracay

Class 1 Philippine Kiteboarding / Kitesurfing Destinationn

Kiteboarding in Boracay as a sport started in the 2000s. Windsurfers were sometimes bored with the light winds at the beginning and end of the northeast monsoon season and brought along their own kites. Kiteboarding schools opened to support the trend and today Boracay’s Bulabog Beach is full of gracefully swaying kites and leaping kiteboarding enthusiasts.

Because of the unique geographic location of Boracay Island, and it being exposed alternately to the northeast and southwest monsoons, it is possible to kiteboard year round in Boracay. However, the majority of kiteboarders prefer the northeast monsoon season and enjoy the shallow water within the reef that fronts Bulabog Beach. The large expanse of shallow water between the reef and Bulabog Beach makes it an excellent place for teaching people how to kiteboard safely.

In January every year the Boracay Funboard Cup attracts hundreds of kiteboarders from around the World to compete in a week-long series of competitions. Trophies and prizes are on offer for novices all the way through to professional kiteboarders. The Boracay Funboard Cup is the largest, regular gathering of kiteboarding enthusiasts in Asia.

Kiteboarding Locations Around Boracay

Kiteboarding in Boracay is most usually seen along the East-facing Bulabog Beach. Almost all of the kiteboarding resorts, and shops selling kiteboarding equipment, are located here. During the southwest monsoon season you will find some avid kiteboarders testing themselves against the strong south-westerlies along Boracay's famous white beach.

At least one enterprise offers kiteboarding expeditions aboard a luxury catamaran. The yacht takes small groups to other islands and beaches for a three or four day expedition of kiteboarding fun to places few have seen before.

Over the years, World record kiteboarding distance attempts have been made from Boracay Beach, to the islands of northern Palawan. As yet no new World records have been set but surely one will be set soon.

If the hustle and bustle of Bulabog Beach gets too much then kiteboarders frequently take the daily ferry to Looc Bay, Tablas Island, and the hop over to Aglicay Beach where the waters are similar, the winds strong and the sand just as white.

For the truly adventurous, a ferry journey to Cresta de Gallo, Sibuyan, offers the ultimate pristine kiteboarding destination on the planet.
