Snorkeling Camiguin

Class 1 Philippines Snorkeling Destination

Snorkeling was identified as a primary water sport for the Camiguin islands because the municipalities wanted to develop low-impact tourism opportunities. Around Camiguin there are more than 40 Marine Protected Areas to snorkel and most waters here are less than 20 meters deep.

The waters are clear around Camiguin for much of the year and during the December to March period, when more abundant plankton reduces visibility a little, you have the chance to meet whale sharks as they migrate through the Philippines - entering from San Bernardino Strait and Surigao Stait, through the Visayas and along the North coast of Mindanao.

Snorkeling Locations Around Camiguin

Snorkeling can be rewarding around the entire circumference of Camiguin Island as well as on White Island and Mantigue Island. The most significant thing about snorkeling around Camiguin is that almost every snorkeling area provides a different experience - there are sea mounts, coral gardens, lava fields and everywhere a wide variety of marine life that changes throughout the seasons.

Many would argue that Mantigue Island offers the best Camiguin snorkeling experience, as it is remote from civilization and was one of the first Marine Protected Areas. Whilst Mantigue Island is without doubt very beautiful and dramatic for snorkeling, White Island and Sunken Cemetery are also bountiful. White Island is notable for snorkeling because it offers both sheltered lagoon and wall habitats. The Sunken Cemetery, although it may be somewhat overcrowded with first-time snorkelers, nevertheless offers a wide variety of coral formations and marine life. And you should not miss the giant clam reserve on the South coast, where thousands of gaping clams appear to fill all horizons.
