Information About Davao

Davao is located in the southern shores of Mindanao Island, along the West coast of the Davao Gulf. During the last century, Davao City grew to become a major trading port, especially for agricultural products such as bananas and pineapple. Around Davao you can go white water rafting, wakeboard, scuba dive, snorkel, swim and parasail, although to be truthful the scuba diving and snorkeling is much better around nearby Samal Island.

Davao City is surrounded to the North and West by mostly forested mountains; much of the lowland areas are filled with plantations of banana (to the North) and pineapple (to the West). The Davao Gulf is well flushed by tidal flows and has abundant fish stocks, including tuna.

Davao is increasingly becoming a tourist destination. Davao International Airport provides a gateway to the provinces of Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur and, of course, to the Samal Island group, these provinces are recognized for their superb caving (potholing), mountaineering, surfing, scuba diving and other adventure sports.

Davao is rightly known as the fruit capital of the Philippines, due in part to the abundance and variety of fruit bat species that inhabit the limestone caves to the North and on Samal Island to the East.

Davao City lays claim to being the World centre for durian fruit. Durian is one of Davao City’s major tropical fruit harvests along with pomelo and jack fruit.
